Tax on excise refund?

Bit of a strange one for you all?

Due to an excise exemption we were unaware of; we are entitled to a refund on excise duty paid on diesel. This has all been cleared with the Revenue. The refund is a bit on the hefty side (more than 5K) and I'm a bit worried.

Will a refund from Customs & Excise be subject to an income tax? We are not VAT registered, so it will be paid directly back to ourselves. Does this not then bump up our gross earnings for the years concerned? It goes back to 2002.

Any thoughts appreciated. I'm getting the serious run around from the Revenue themselves, typical story, head doesn't know what the tail is doing
