Tax judgement - cannot pay.

What happens if the revenue issue a judgement against a person for underpayment of taxes that occurred 5 years previously. Person is currently on the dole and has insufficient savings to cover the arrears?

Talk to an accountant and get them to try arrange an instalment programme with the Revenue - its a long shot - but worth a shot.

Otherwise what? Bankruptcy? Jail? There's no equity in family home so sale of that will not release any funds. Just trying to figure out worst case scenario here.

Worst scenario - Revenue could get a judgment mortgage which would sit until any sale of the house was effected at which point it could not be sold without paying off the judgement mortgage.

Talk to an accountant ...

It's a lot cheaper to talk to the Revenue Commissioners. Most of the people who work for them are not ogres. Their aim is to collect the tax due and if they can do so without putting people into bankruptcy or out of their homes they will do so.

Yes but the Revenue are hardly going to tell you ways of getting out of paying!

I would agree with the OP (who's on the dole and presumable cannot afford an accountant) talking to Revenue first to discuss other options such as instalments etc.

Thanks guys. Yes, It's not that I want to avoid paying, it's that I need some flexibility now that I'm out of work.

They will allow you to set up a payment plan, paying off a certain amount every week or month. Have a word with them and explain your situation.
