Please excuse what is probably a silly query ! I note as a married person the exemption limit for income tax is £40K. What puzzles is that my total tax credits come to 6140 euro which suggests i should pay tax on sums over thirty thousand seven hundred euro..6140 by 5. I know this applies to everyone as the tax credits seem to be less than the tax on 40K euro.

its the SRCOP ( standard rate cut-off point ) is over 40k........which means , under this amount you pay tax at 20%.

Thanks Alldoyles. I am still puzzled. On the Revenue site there is a section outlining Exemption Limits and in another part it says that persons whose total income is less than the Exemption Limit will not have to pay tax in that year.

That is correct for persons OVER 65 the exemption married is €40,000. If your income is less than €40,000 but over the amount your standard tax credits cover ( 6,140 x 5 ) then you can apply to have the exemption amounts applied instead.
