I am heading off to australia next feb and am just wondering if i can claim back tax before i go. i intend to work for the month of jan. can i claim my unused tax credits or do i need to be in the country for 183 days?
Only in relation to the amount of tax paid. You can only claim the tax you paid in January back.
Just ring revenue and tell them what you are doing. You will need to return your P45. It may take them a month or so as it is a very busy time of the year for them.
You can apply for a refund of tax paid by supplying the following details to your local tax office: - a completed claim form P50 (available from [broken link removed]) - your P45 (available from your employer) - a completed return of income form 11;
Send the above along with a statement to the effect that you are going to live abroad permanently or in such circumstances that you will not be resident in Ireland for at least the following tax year.
