tax back on medical expenses - jointly assessed

Hi,

I was just on the phone with the tax office and got even more confused... We are joinly assessed with my husband, and have some medical expenses for the last year. On my name I have about 950eur (dental +GP+etc) and he has 46euros GP. They also said that we have to pay the first 125eur if the claim is for one person or 250eur for two.

My question is - is it not better to claim only my expenses 950(less 125) rather then the total expenses 996eur (less 250). When I asked them straight they said I HAVE to claim everything and can't claim only mine if he has bills too?! Also, do you know if dental and other medical (GP) are claimed together - do I sum up everything, or they calculate it separately? If he is the named person on the joint assessment do I put his name on all the forms?

And final question - does anybody know if ante-netal ultrasounds qualify as medical expenses?

Thanks alot, and sorry for all the questons!

Just claim for your own expenses and deduct the excess of €125...the dental expenses should be filled in on a Med2 form .

As per the last contribution I don't think that this is correct. Couples, spouses, families etc. may make joint claims if they want and it makes sense to bundle all expenses together, but they can also make individual claims if they so choose as far as I know. The "excess" for individual claims is €125 while for joint claims it's €250 so, in some cases, it makes sense for individual claims to be made. I myself have made individual claims in the past rather than joint ones for myself and my wife when I had individual expenses above the €125 limit and she had no significant medical expenses of her own.
