Tax back, but for what?

Hi Guys,

I recently found out i could claim tax back for a few things i hadn't realised.

So i claimed back for 4 years college fees, 3 years rent and some bin charges. I sent all the forms in together but in seperate envelopes.

Four weeks later i recieved an extra €280 in my wages. I checked with my employer and they said it was tax back, but i wasn't sure for what and they didn't know.

I was sure the total i was owed was closer to €1500, so i rang the tax office and asked what that payment was for (just incase there was still some being processed). They told me they can't give out that info. Is this right? Surely i'm entitled to know what these payments are???

Re: Tax back, but for what???

Any refund you received in your wage packet is for the current year only. Do you get a pay slip? All your cumulative details should be there.

Any claims you made for previous years will be paid (provided all your taxes were paid up to date in those years) either through your bank or by cheque.

A form P21 (balancing statement) will be issued to you showing all details.

Hi Traceybere, I don't have an answer to your specific questions but you wrote something that caught my attention.

I'm just wondering were you also working during your four years of college?

I was a student for the past 4 years (up until Feb 2007), but because I wasn't paying tax, I presumed I could't make any claims, even though I'm now currently employed ?

Hi,

I was always under the illusion that you could only claim tax relief if you paid tax in the first place. The reason i ask is i dont pay tax in my current postion but i have incurred tuition fees this year. Any advise welcome.

Correct - you can only claim tax relief on tuition fees if you have paid tax in that same year (same applies for parents/spouse if they paid fees on your behalf - they must have taxable income to have the fees credited against).

Can I claim tax back this year for 2003?
I know there's now a 4 year limit but does the 4 years include current year? I've checked the revenue website but it's not designed for the taxpayer

Just as another note to this - you are entitled to the 20% relief - but only if you paid the fees yourself. If your employer pays or ulitmately pays the tuition fees you have no entitlement (as your employer will claim on these fees). To claim you just need to request a tax invoice from your tuition provider.
