Taking Guitar on Holidays

I am travelling with Ryanair soon and am thinking of bringing my guitar. I know it costs €60 return to bring it. I heard of someone who brought one before (with a foreign airline) and it got damaged even though it was in a hard case. As it has to go in with the rest of the luggage, am I taking too much risk?..is a musical instrument given better treatment after paying such a fee - I'm sure they don't get a special place in the luggage area. Any baggage handlers out there with advice!!

thanks

Dave

i saw someone before bringing one as hand luggage, i didnt see where they actually had it on a the plane but i presume they had to buy a seat for it, for items that you dont want to go in as baggage but is too big for hand luggage i think you have to buy a seat, it happened for my sister in laws wedding, she had to buy a seat for the dress, im not 100% on whether they do have a special area in baggage for delicate items
