sorry if this is deat with elsewhere but i cant find definitive answer

out of the blue i'm getting windows/system32/config/system error message on my Dell home pc

it asking me to use the original set-up cd rom and to press r to start repair.

I have an operating system cd rom entitled reinstallation cd windows xp home edition. Does anyone know if this is the correct cd, and secondly and more importantly how can i ensure i dont wipe work, music and family photos ?

You could probably do a restore via Safe Mode and bring it back to an earlier date. If you are not technical - it is best to get someone to take a look at it. If you do, do a restore you will loose the data from now until the last restore.

if you load the CD and reload the software then you will delete everything from the system and it will not be restored.

Someone should be able to resolve this without having to wipe the machine !

Well you should have a backup somewhere else. Personally I'd hook the drive up to another PC, back it up. Then put it back in the original PC and then try a restore.

Without a backup, its taking a risk that the restore will not go as planned. I've never found it that reliable.
