I have just finalised the sale of a house. Contracts have been signed and the sale in closing in 10 days. How do I go about switching the Gas. phone, electricity and monitored alarm? I don't want the buyers to have the hassle of disconnection. Do I just contact the various companies with a final meter reading? And advise the phone/alarm companies of the closing date?

It should be as simple as that yes. The owners may need to contact the companies as well to let them know where to send the final bills.

Hi I sold my house about 6 weeks ago.
If you read the metre and notify companies, the new owner will have to ring them too. I was charged the standing charge for gas and electricity for the period before she signed up...about 7/8 days. They will then send you a final bill.

Ring them about a week after you move out to make sure the new owner has changed over. The supplier will send them a letter notifying them that they need to change it over too.

Be careful with Bord Gais - they do not indemnify you from liability for future bills unless you actually get the gas cut off. Even if you take a reading and give them the new people's names. ESB also want a phone number of the new owners but at least they are more reasonable than Bord Gais.
