Switching on heating when absent

We will be away for a few weeks soon and am wondering what are the best times to switch it on say twice for an hour or so each 24 hours to keep house reasonably warm and avoid any frozen pipes.

That sounds expensive, put the heating on low for couple of hours around 4 or 5am, the coldest part of the day/night

we have no thermostat: windows very poor and will be replaced next spring. I recall reading somewhere that it costs roughly under 2 euro per hour to keep t he heating on so if this is correct it would not be that expensive to have it on for a few hours each night.

A frost thermostat in a well positioned area within your home would do just as good a job. The frost stat would have a permanent live with it's switching circuit bypassing the existing switching circuit to the boiler. If motorised valves are connected, these would also be introduced to open from the frost stat so circuits would be open for circulation.
