I want to switch credit cards but unsure how to go about this.
do i have to cancel my current card before switching to another card or do i wait to get new card before cancelling old one.

will i have to pay a cancellation fee though in this months statement i paid the stamp duty?

Belle,
Assuming you have applied and been accepted by another provider they will switch you quite painlessly. You provide the original Banks name, your Account and nominate an amount to be transferred. The Government €30 is charged annualy and due in April I think, so if the transfer goes through in May or June and you have been charged and paid the fee by your Bank this month you can then request a letter from them confirming the fee has been paid which you should forward to the new providor and you will be exempt from the payment until next April.
If you get a better rate its more than worth the effort.

Switched recently and it was no problem -rang aibto cancel and asked for got letter saying stamp duty already paid and gave to halifax. Halifax gives you €100 credit on the card - excellent deal.
