SW help with mortgage

Hi

Just wondering if it is possible to get some help from the SW in paying a mortgage. (even temporarily) My mother has been on disability Benefit for nearly six months. She bought a new house in March 2007 as had good job then and good prospects.
Has just found out that her employer is gone bust and she wont have a job to go back to, has spent her saving on mortgage repayments to date, and worse of all, she also invested her life savings in that business before they went under!!!!!!! She is 53, divorced and not much chance of picking up another job to pay that high mortgage.
Mortgage company talking about repossession, where to turn?????

Firstly to MABS to try to schedule a repayment schedule with Bank, and other creditors.

Also go to the local "relieving" officer to see if she is entitled to get anything else. A lot will depend on the total house hold income.

I would suggest that your mother approach the Community Welfare Officer for assistance with 'Mortgage Interest Supplement'. This payment covers the interest only of the mortgage i.e. the profit made by the lending institute not the capital. If your mother is in receipt of Disability Benefit (Non means tested payment) and has no other source of income e.g savings, maintenance etc then it is possible she will receive this supplement. One other factor that is considered by the Community Welfare Officer is that your mother was able to make the repayments when she drew down the mortgage. (i.e. She was not receiving a Social Welfare payment). The Lending institute will not proceed with repossession if this Supplement is paid as they are receiving their 'profit'. I also recommend contacting MABS.

does your mothers mortgage protection insurance include anything that might cover loss of earnings?

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your advice. I will definetley look in to the "interest mortgage payment" from SW. Would you beleive that she stopped paying the mortgage protection policy in February because she thought she was saving money!!

Thanks again.

but if she was on disability for 6 months her policy was still active when she became unable to work........
