Surveyor's Report - legal standing?

Hi, I'm a first time buyer buying a second hand property. Can anybody advise me on the importance of getting a surveyor's report over and above the advice of a family member who did a detailed inspection of the property? Does a surveyor's report have any legal standing (e.g. in the future, if something goes wrong with the house)? any advice much appreciated. thanks.

i'm fairly sure that you will need a fully insured surveyors report. we had to get one for our self build but i think that lenders require this for any mortgage property.

having said that, the wording of the final sign-off cert was so ambiguous that it seemed to cover the surveyor if anything ever went wrong.

as with any service, try to find one that's personally recommended.

good luck.:)
