Greetings All,

Can you suggest good hotels that are reasonably/economically priced. Do you have any special advice for people going first time?

We r planning to go in December mid.

Thanks in advance

Re: suggestion on stay in dubai

Hi cnu,

I'm due to go there in November ! I have a friend who lives there and another who used to live there so I'll ask them and come back to you....Have you got a price range in mind ? 2** 3** 4** etc.

r2d2,

Thank you for your response, I think i'd like to see something from 3* and upwards [I dont know how the 2*s are in there].

Okay, I've mailed the guy in Dubai and asked him to recommend a 3*...He's had both clients and friends stay there so I'm hoping he should have a good idea !

Great time to visit Dubai! Weather will be great. Don't be put off by the feeling that it seems like a giant building site...it is.. but there is plenty to see and do. Make sure you visit Dubai Museum - maybe do the big bus tour to get an an idea of some areas/sites you would like to return to visit. Try and do a full day trip to the desert- can be arranged through Safari companies- just the right time to see how beautiful it really is. If you have friends there try and persuade them to do a one night camp...in the desert...bonfire and stars...heaven. Traffic is awful but plenty of great hotels and resturants along the beach front but make sure you have plenty of money to sepnd. Try the indian resurants in Karama (eg sind punjab) or Satwa (e.g. Ravi's) for a really cheap night house. Drive over to the East Coast and swim with tsurtle near Snoopy Island. Learn about Islamic traditions at the Jumeirah Mosque. Plenty to do and enjoy as long as you are open to it!
Don't beleve those who say that it is strictly a hotel holiday...make the effort!
Enjoy

r2d2 and Dubai,

Thank you for your advice and help!

Have a lovely weekend!

Hi cnu,

Deatils received back from my mate in Dubai are not as 'broad' as I hoped....He mentions two hotels in particular, The Dubai Marine Hotel, this one is beside the beach and quite close to town...The other one he mentioned was the Meridian Fairways Hotel (this would be ideal if you were heading out to the Rugby Sevens).....I'll mail my old boss this morning, he lived there and goes back once or twice a year (I've a funny feeling his experience will be at the top end though)

Hi Cnu,

We are just back from Honeymoon in Dubai and we loved it. Plenty to do and see and I would strongly recommend the desert safaris, a city bus tour and Dubai museum. We stayed in Le Royal Meridian which is 5* along the beach. It was a fabulous hotel. The restuarants there were excellent as well (Asain, Prime Beef, Italian) and open to non residents. The hotel also ran daily shuttle buses to the various shopping malls around the city and to the Gold Souk (market). August probably wasn't the best time weather wise as it was 43-47 degrees most days which made it impossible to stay outside for any length of time. The Lonely Planet guide to Dubai was very useful with most of the recommendations being spot on.

Enjoy

Beam me up and r2d2,

Thanks for the info. Do you know roughly how much I can expect per/day hotel charges [including reservation and any other expenses].

Also outing is it expensive? If am planning for a week, other than the shopping whats the minimum I must carry cash with me? Am sorry if am asking a very stup*d question.

Thank you.

Cnu,

VISA and mastercard are very widely accepted in Dubai but they are not as keen on AmEx and do not accept Diners Club. You have very little need for cash except to have some smaller notes available for tipping hotel porters etc. Service charge is included in all the restaurants so you are not expected to tip unless you want to single out someone for exceptional service. There is a large selection of restaurants with some of the best being in the hotels. A nice dinner for 2 cost about €100 with wine and soft drinks making up a good portion of the cost. We needed very little cash as we used credit cards for most things.

The city bus tour was about US$20 (The AED (Dirham) is at a fixed rate with the US$ so both currencies are accepted) which included pick up at the hotel, english speaking guide, entrance to the Dubai museum and a trip across Dubai Creek in a abra (a small wooden taxi boat) and drop back to the hotel. It was good value for money.

The dessert safari also included pick up and drop off at the hotel, a four wheel drive across the sand dunes, sand borading, a trip to a camel farm and a dessert bbq with belly dancing and other such entertainment. I think it was about $65.

As we were on honeymoon we splashed out a bit more on the hotel but there is a very large selection of hotels on sites such as and the Lonely Planet gives a large selection of hotels to suit all budgets(also gives very good recommendations for restaurants on all budgets). is a travel agent in Ireland that specialises in Dubai and www.classicresorts.ie also has a good selection of accommodation. www.escape2.ie also has some information on the tours available as well as accommodation.

Just to let you know there is a huge amount of constrution going on there at the minute, both buildings and roads. It didn't affect our holiday but just be aware that some hotels may have views of building sites and it can be quite noisey.

Hope this helps

Thank you Beam me up,
