Suggestions for 12-14k budget?

VW are the most overrated brand out there. They are if anything bottom of the list and just before the French and Italians when it comes to reliability. Strangely enough though, Skoda seem to have an enviable reputation for quality and reliability even though they are 100% VW components and engineering. One brand that are very underrated in the reliability stakes are Ford. Ever since they got their fingers burnt with the Mk5 Escort they have been making cars that are brilliant in engineering and packaging.

[Edit] sorry, may clash with Jeff_24's double post ... I'm talking bout the Octvia here:

I know what you're saying. She used to like them (the new 05/06? model h/b), but all of a sudden went off them. (Think women and pub talk ... one of the bird's b/fs drives a 00 316 and the women think its the best thing since sliced bread, despite it being a piece of sh!te!!! try pointing out to a girl that its a crap car and worth about 10k!)

Know a guy that's had 3 octavias since 99 and the only prob was the 02 one ... the boot stopped unlocking off the c/l. Lovely solid car ... had a brand new 07 last Jan as a garage car when mine being serviced. But ... the lady loves Milk Tray etc....

An outrageous statement without foundation...

Was waiting for a post like this - surprised it didn't come sooner

Apart from what I've said already - what do you have against it?

It basically has nothing to offer. It's soulless, it's rubbish to drive, it's dull looking, it's tinny, it has a cheap interior, it's unsafe (it didn't even have ABS as standard until around 2003), it's thirsty and surprisingly it's not even that reliable.

I will think of more things soon.........

Well the driving experience - yes - but it's not always a priority for buyers. Cheap interior/tinny - yes, but ditto for nearly all Jap/Koreans - and many people don't really care about this either. But you are wrong on the reliability:
