student son in uk-car insurance?

Anyone any advice or experience about son/daughter going to UK and getting car insurance?? He is 18 on irish provisional and in college in UK from this September for 3 years. UK insurance search engines wont touch him as he fails UK residency rules. As he is in UK from September to June with holidays he can then apply for September 2009 but has to transfer his licence. He hopes to pass his test at end of year but premiums seem to go up not down when you do this!! Anyone else face this problem and who were the best companies to deal with Thanks
 

The only piece of advice that your son / yourself require, is that the licence he posesses is of no use outside of the 26 counties of the ROI.

He must obtain a British licence in order for him to be in a position to use a motor vehicle in Britain / U.K.
