hi all
im a 22 year old student going in to 3rd year living away from home. i have a part time job and am pretty much paying my own way through college. i have been offered a voluntary redundancy at work. im just wondering if i take it would i be entitled to any form of form of SW payment or anything equivelant eg grants etc. any replies would be gratly appreciated

To get Jobseekers Benefit, you must have the required PRSI contributions paid and you must be available for work.

If you are a student, you are not available for work. During the summer, I think you would be available. The contribution conditions are hard to follow, so you are best just applying and seeing what happens.

In short:

  • If you have paid PRSI for less than 2 years, you probably won't get any Jobseekers Benefit.
  • If you have paid PRSI for at least 2 years, you will get Jobseekers Benefit for 9 months.
  • If you have paid PRSI for over 5 years, you will get Jobseekers Benefit for 12 months.

It's worth noting that you can claim JB while between semesters (i.e. Easter, Christmas) but not JA.

If you are entitled to claim JB for 9 months but sign off after 4 months to go back to college are the remaining monts forfeited or can you re-claim the following summer?
