Structural Engineer for extension?

Hi

I am knocking down an internal wall on the ground floor and extending out on to the patio ( no planning permission needed ). I would like plans drawn up for my builder so that he knows exactly what he can do in terms of retaining supporting structures etc as he is not familiar with the houses in my estate. Would a structural engineer be the best person to do these plans for the builder or do I need an architect? Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks Leo, I had read that thread alright but it didn't quite answer my query. In the meantime I rang a structural engineering firm to discuss the problem. They promised to ring back the next morning. That was the day before yesterday!Still hoping for some advice from somewhere!

it probably doesn't matter which you go for - as long as you go for one of them - that way the correct specs can be issued to the builder
