I would like to retile our ensuite but I am afraid of damaging the plasterboard underneath when I strip the tiles. Has anyone ever stripped tiles succesfully and if so would they have any tips?

You are going to have to replace the plasterboard , it is almost impossible to get the tiles off without damaging board beneath. Board is easy to replace just make sure you buy correct thickness 3/4 or 1/2 inch I think. Also special type of board for wet areas called Green plasterboard.

Yes you can, but to do it correctly you have to roughen the surface of the existing tiles to allow the new adhesive to key in. This can be done by mechanical means i.e. a grinding disk or similar , or by chemical etching which is more specialised. The results are not always great.

If you run the search option in this forum there are previous threads which may give some advice.

Neighbour here is a builder and surveyor and insists on cementboard behind tiles - probably worth the extra cost.

Thanks for all help. I just thought I would let u know that tiles were stripped successfully. The problem we encountered was'nt so much the plasterboard underneath but moreso the tile cement which had to be scrapped off which took a lot longer than stripping the actual tiles. We couldn't tile over the existing tiles as it was only tiled around the shower cubicle and we plan on fully tiling the bathroom. It was a job we were dreading but it wasn't as bad as we thought.
