Anyone any ideas on why there is a switch in my hallway down the wall near the floor where you'd expect a plug to be?

Does the switch have a light on it? Would it be for a storage heater?

It sounds to me like a fused switch, it is used where appliances are hard wired into an electrical supply (i.e. no plug). Similar to electric hand driers etc.

It's not near a storage heater or any other appliance I can see. I thought it could be a switch for an attic light but I don't see a light fitting up there, then again it is quite dark! I guess it doesn't really matter I'm just curious.

My house (with gfch) has two switches which both need to be on to switch on the electric immersion heater. One is in the landing and the other is downstairs in the utility beside the washing machine.... go figure?!?!

hee hee, underfloor heating! chance would be a fine thing, it's a cheap as chips (build quality!) apartment. The heating works fine without going near it so I don't imagine there's a connection.
