Stopped driving a new car without insurance

The last time I bought a car my insurance provider literally gave me the choice of having insurance switch over at the minute of my choice. It was a trade in.

From memory my chosen time was something like 5pm so I left for the garage with about ten minutes buffer to arrive early and I didn’t set off until 5pm on the nose.
 
Same as Dr. Strangelove, I traded in a car in November. I used the insurance companies phone App to change my insurance over to the new reg while I was in the showroom.
 
On the subject of driving without insurance, be extra carefull when changing insurance policies.

Every year I reapply for a new policy rather than renewing my existing policy. I do this to get a cheaper policy.

I have done this for many years with Aviva and never had an issue. The insurance policies always started and begun at midnight on the same date.

Last time I changed from Aviva to Zurich. This change was fine,
Aviva policy ended midnight and Zurich policy started at the same time.

This time I did a policy change from Zurich to Zurich.
Zurich appear to cease their policies at midday rather than midnight.

I hadn't noticed this midday cease of my last policy and I took out my new policy from midnight as usual.

This meant that there was a 12 hour gap with no insurance that I had not noticed.

Luckily Zurich sent me a text message warning, on the final day of my old policy, notifying me that I was no longer covered by insurance from midday.

If I hadn't read this text in time, I would have been unknowingly driving without insurance for a 12 hour period.

Be very careful to check the ceasing times on your policies if you are changing policies.

Are you sure that you were insured?

Your insurance policy probably insures you to drive other cars not owned by you. But don't they sometimes require that the other car is itself insured?

Update: Just checked my own policy and there is no such restriction. So I can drive another car whether it is insured or not as long as I don't own it.

Good to know that if someone buys a car, they can get a friend to collect it if the insurance has not yet been put in place.
 
I think that driving of other cars only covers 3 party cover for the other car. So there might be no accidental damage cover for the other ininsured car.
 
Okay I know things might have changed in the mean time but 30 years ago I was caught speeding twice
For the first offence driving at well over 100 MPH, I was advised by my solicitor to get a barrister as it would show to the court that I was taking it seriously and I only got a fine. The second time 20MPH over I decided not to get legal representation which ended up in a fine and an endorsement on my licence

For the OP don't take a chance on this, talk to a solicitor it shouldn't be that expensive compared to the alternative should it go that way

I have the option (for more money of course) for comprehensive driving of other cars. As not many of my pals ask me to drive their brand new Maybachs I don't feel the need to exercise the option.
