Sterling Bank Account

With sterling as cheap as it is at the moment, I am thinking of opening a sterling bank account and buying a couple of thousand in sterling (I'll be spending a good bit of money in NI over next few months - house renovation).

Is it possible for an individual to open a sterling bank account in Ireland with one of the major banks? Will N.I. / English companies accept their cheques?

Am I better just buying cash and holding onto it?
 
buy cash i see both currencies on a par by end of january
