Sterling Account

Hi,

I have inherited roughly 40k sterling in England and I am wondering what is the best plan to do with it.

I thinking that I want to keep it in Sterling, the rate isn't great at the moment and I can afford to wait it out. Can I open an account in Ireland and maintain it in sterling? Can I transfer the money there from a UK account? Will I have to pay any charges for that? If I have a sterling account can I have a debit/credit card on that account. Ideally I would like to be able to buy things in UK in sterling.

Any other ideas?
