Steam Iron keeps tripping board switch

Lately when using the steam iron, it trips the switch on fuse box. Anyone any idea what the problem is?

That or water getting to where it shouldn't within the iron. Perhaps drain it and try it dry, if it doesn't trip then that's probably what it is. If that's the case, chuck it and buy a new one! Not worth the risk.

Trying to establish if tripping is the fault of the appliance (iron) or the wiring in sockets/board and a particular appliance (iron) would trip.

We had exact same problem pre-xmas with our steam iron. Water was definitely leaking somewhere where it shouldnt have been. Got new iron, fuse not tripping any more.

Happened to me a couple of months ago. Replaced fuse in plug of iron etc - no use. Bin that iron!!l

If it's a good iron, before you bin it, its worth the effort to check if the electrical cord has been damaged just where it enters the iron itself. The cord at this point suffers a lot of hardship and I have seen in the past where the copper wires have been exposed through the insulation and can touch each other when the cord is moved around through use. This will cause the fuseboard to trip as it causes an electrical short.
Should be easy enough to check if this is the problem by removing the end cover with a screwdriver and have a look. If it is, cut off the damaged part and re-terminate the remaining good end of the cord.

Thanks for feedback - iron has had its day - buying new.

If you're interested there are good bargains in steam irons in Argos catalogue clearance. Got one yesterday which is reduced and its great. 3m cord is very handy and all the other extras too. Works out at €44.95 in Irish catalogue.

DON'T BIN THE IRON!!!

Bring to the shop where you're buying the new one for recycling.

That's what you pay the WEEE charge for and it's better for the environment.

Too true - had forgotten about that!
