Hi,

My missus is coming to the end of her unpaid maternity leave. We are considering whether she should go back to work or not. If she doesn't go back, do all her tax credits transfer to me?

Thanks.

Her PAYE allowance will be lost and you will have a reduced (combined) standard rate cut off point.

Next year you will be able to claim the home carer credit.

In the meantime, if she wasn't being paid by her employer while on maternity leave, you can get her credits for that period transferred to you which (if you can fully utilise the additional higher band) is worth over €500 a month.

In case it's of any use ... will you qualify for the Home Carer's Tax Credit?

Update: sorry - I see that this credit was mentioned above!

so what does the Home Carers tax credit actually put in your pocket, assuming carer has no additional income and spouse is taxed at higher rate.

we may have same decision to make next year when 2 arrives.

.
My understanding of this tax credit is a dependent cant be classed as a spouse, so who will you be claiming it for?
