A lady I know who is now 77yrs of age has never claimed for her old age non-contributary pension as her husband ran his own business and she felt she didn't need the pension. However, their circumstances have changed businesswise and her husband is not expected to live much longer so she will need some form of income. She has been advised to claim the pension but would it be means tested and if she were granted a pension would it be back-dated to when she probably should have applied for it at 65 yrs?

If her husband had his own business he may have Class S contributions and therefore he may have an entitlement to a Contributory pension
