I am getting involved in a startup company and of course there has to be some form of advertising to ensure we can secure a customer base.

It is a new concept so we have secured an editorial in a national newspaper, thinking of banner ads in 1 or 2 websites. Are there any other cheap methods of getting your message out there without resorting to flyers or the like??
 
it is in the financial services sector, hoping to be innovative in our approach but need to get this accross to potential clients.
 
Who are your potential clients? - General public, SMEs, Large companies?
 
General public would be my main interest at the beginning, then moving onto those with an investment portfolio.

Slightly away from your question, and I'm not too sure if you are ready for this but I would be also shouting it from the roof tops what you do. Well maybe start with something simple like including a signature on your posts like this....
