I am thinking of starting up my own business at home. I am unemployed at the moment. I have the idea, research and doing up a business plan at the moment. I have to regisiter the business and set up a website down the line. I have heard of a back to work allowance for self employed while you sort out your business that you get instead of dole. Has anyone got this and how does it work? When should I be telling SW about my idea as I dont want them taking away my SW money until I know I can get this allowance. I have savings but I will need to have some money coming into the house.

Think you need to be out of work for 2 year to qualify for grants. Best of to go to citizen info office.

Hi,
I heard something about this and checked it out further, as my husband is unemployed. There are two schemes.
1. Back to Work Enterprise Allowance. For this you need to be getting job seekers for 12 months.
2. Short Term Enterprise allownace.

For both you need to make an appointment with the Job Facilitator in your area before you set up your business. Your SW office will tell you who this is. My husband has to wait 2 weeks for his appointment.
After your meeting you will then get an application form, which from what I hear is like writing a book to complete.

There was an article in the Sunday Times yesterday, which stated that only around 400 people are receiving these allowances. So it's either people don't realise they exist or it is hard to qualify for them.

I hope this was of some help.

If you live in a rural area talk to County Enterprise Board or Leader Programme in your area. It depends on the type of business you are considering Browtal
