stamp duty

Just to clarify a previous query, if a foreign national or irish national has lived abroad, sold their property there to move to here, have revenue the ability to check whether you have previously owned a property whilst living abroad? And if so - how?!

They probably can't easily do this but to make a false declaration/claim (e.g. for stamp duty purposes) to Revenue is a serious offence and nobody in their right mind would recommend it as a prudent course of action.

Remember also that the Revenue have a policy of turning their attention to particular areas many years after an event. Many people started bogus non-resident accounts some years ago and the Revenue did little or nothing about it at that time. But they subsequently investigated and charged interest and penalties.

How would you know that they might not sign an agreement for sharing of information with the country in question at some point in the future?
