Stamp duty paid by FTB

Hi All,

I purchased a house for 370K and signed the contracts/ closing in End of Feb 2007 blissfully unaware that the govt. would abolish stamp duty for the purchases from 31 march 2007 onwards.
Just wondering is there any hope out there were that i could have a case for getting some of that monety back?

Very little case here I'm afraid. You could try to bring it to Brian Cowen's attention that the statements he made at the time you bought suggested that there would be no changes in stamp duty in the short term. The statments he made regarding stamp duty were indeed misleading but I wouldn't hold my breath for him to recompensate you for it.

I am in a very similar situation to sandyk. I closed the purchase of my house in early/mid Feb 2007. However, I received a copy of a letter from the Land Registry dated 31st May 2007 stating that my property registration is now complete. Would I be eligble for a SD rebate considering the final 'stamping' of the contracts etc. probably did not occur until after 31st March 2007?

The relief applies only to deeds executed after 31.3.2007.
The process is
1. Sign Contracts.
2. Complete deal and execute Deed.
3. Register Deed.

Number 2 is the only significant date. Not 3.
