Stale/ putrid smell from AirCon

Lately when I use the AirCon in the car, the air that's recycled back to me has a stale, unpleasant smell if you know what I mean. Today I gave a lift to a mate who compared it to the air in a damp hotel room! Anyone any ideas what it might be & what I need to do to fix it?

Change the pollen filter, buy one of those air-con cleaner sprays in Halfords / ALDI and follow the instructions.

Is there a water-leak anywhere - door-seals, boot, wet-carpets?
 
I had similar problems myself and used the air conditioning cleaner noted above. No problems since.

(no connection to micksgarage just a satisfied customer)
