Stairs to Garage conversion

Recently (as in last year) did extension that included building a garage. We ended up with a great upstairs space as the builder kept the roof pitch in line with house roof pitch (dormer). This extra space was unexpected and so we insulated floored and put in a window. However the access was always going to too tight for conventional stairs....due to door position we couldnt have a turn. Anyhow the builder said he would sort something. Unfortunately what we got was to say the least crude! I think i probably could have slapped a few pieces of wood together better! However as we were not charged for any of it were not really in a position to complain!
Anyhow the room now being used as a kind of games room.....air hockey etc. The stairs is a concern however....the steepness is one thing but the steps are also narrow and myself have nearly come a cropper a couple of times. With kids 10 & 5 up and down i think we need to change it. I am looking at the idea of a spiral staircase (i know will make it impossible to get stuff up/down) or alternatively if i could source them a stair that while steep has alternate threads.....If anyone has done this or any ideas or tipsi would be grateful.....Budget for this not a lot all money spent by now!.Thanks all

have a read here http://www.environ.ie/en/Legislation/DevelopmentandHousing/BuildingStandards/FileDownLoad,26938,en.pdf (new draft stairs regs)

you will probably need to get a local carpenter in to help, make sure he is building to http://www.environ.ie/en/Publications/DevelopmentandHousing/BuildingStandards/FileDownLoad,1651,en.pdf (the current stair regulations), if you search under spiral stairs on goggle you'll see several Irish sites but their generally more expensive than a timber option, a local metal worker may be able to help but again these prices in my experience are more than a timber stairs. best of luck
