With our new arrival 9 months old and crawling like a mad thing we have decided to give our current stairs a makeover due to child safety reasons.

We will be laying a new stairs over the existing one. We are planning to go with white oak. We will be keeping the carpet on the steps but replacing the Banisters, Indents, Newel Posts.

The new stairs will require two & a half newel posts, new oak indents along the side of the stairs plus new Banisters. The stairs is standard size for a 3 bed semi.

Any recommendations of companies supplying this service would be appreciated. We got a quote of €1700 fitted last week.

Hi ... doing the same thing myself, with same wood... my quotes started from €1750 up to €4800. Settled on a guy to do the work for just under €2500 - just trying to iron out latest details... will also be getting other work done by him (in addition to that quote)...

Where are you located?

I'm located in Dublin 15. How big is your stairs?

Stairs would be around the size of a standard 3 bed semi (if not slightly bigger)... it's a dormer bunaglow.. addition for me is the underpart of the stairs will be clad in the white oak also.

I would recommend getting a number of quotes (at least 3), with breakdown in as much detail as possible. Also are you getting the wood "finished"? or do you need to varnish it yourself afterwards - all my quotes were places local in Cork.

The oak will be finished to a point but I will be putting on 2 coats of varnish.

I got a quote for something like this recently from the Door Depot. We're not replacing steps though (as they will be carpeted) and only require a hand rail on the stairs itself (full bannisters with splindles on the landing). This was around the €1k mark fitted

Anyone reckon it would be cheaper to source the stairs components and get a chippy to do the work?

Any recommendations on companies to do the whole job or who just supply?
