Not really, especially if the stains are smoke/ tar based (like nicotine on a smokers fingers). I seen everything suggested from lemon juice to vinegar for cleaning marble. You could try some of these domestic tips first without fear of causing any damage and failing that I'd say you need to get a specialist stone cleaner (from a monumental sculptor- used for cleaning gravestones) but these cleaners are harsh and not cheap either.
