St Patricks Day or lost weekend

Any body else feel the St Patricks day celebrations are getting a bit excessive. I enjoy having a few drinks and a party myself but was a bit suprised to hear them talking on the news on Wednesday about the start of the five day celebrations for St Patricks DAY!!

I've read the weekend coming is already being referred to as 'the lost weekend' as its believed people will over indulge for the whole weekend. As St Patricks Day seems to be more and more about getting plastered, spreading it over a longer period of time seems a bit of a recipe for disaster. I suppose its the linking of drink to the celebration thats the real problem and i really feel in a country which seems to be having a growing drink problem especially among the young that the wrong messages are being sent out and that 'having the Craic' means consuming copious amounts of alcohol.

One significant difference that I have noticed this year is the overt commercialisation of the St Patricks Day binge drinking phenomenon - in the past week Lidl, Centra and Tesco have all heavily advertised St Patricks Day "specials" on beer and other alcoholic products.

On Today FM this morning Ian Dempsey was talking about going to the pub at 9.00 to start his weekend of drinking. Thought that was a bit OTT....
Ian asked the team on Today FM what made them feel Irish and 5 out of 6 people mentioned downing pints as symbolic of Irishness.
ALl the Supermarkets seem to be promoting drink for home drinking this week....

....its got nothing to do with 'celebrating' being Irish or marking the occasion regarding christianity being brought to Ireland......... its all about commercialism & those who hype it up in order to make extra money over as extended a period it can be drawn out for..... the pubs, offies, fast food outlets, taxi drivers will all make a few quid over this period..
