Speedomotor intermittant on Focus

I have a 99 Focus and I have noticed that the speedomotor sometimes stops working for no apparent reason. I could be driving along fine and suddenly it dies. When this happens the odomotor (thing which measures the mileage?) also stops. Any ideas why this might be?
 
Hi Pollyhops, happened to me on a 03 Focus, luckily mine was under warranty but it is a know problem. They had to replace the whole speedo etc but could not reset the milage which was a pain.
 
your vss in the gear box is on its way out ,very common problem on early focus part is around 60 euro and easy to fit
