does any body know if there is somewhere in ireland where i can buy a car seat for a baby in a hip cast??
It's very awkward with a bar below the knees. Conventional car seats are not a fit because child cannot sit back in it.
also not safe as the baby would have to be forward facing instead of rear facing.
i have seen a specialist one on US websites ( $500 )but they do not want to sell outside of US as seat is tested to american safety standards and not european. would the standards not be the same? would it not be as safe here as there?

any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi June,
Have you asked at the hospital ... surely they have come across this problem before ... maybe they can point you in the right direction?
Good luck ... hope you won't be house bound for too long.

thanks henny penny. that gave me the idea to ring a bigger hospital in another part of the country. i got some advice there re britax seats one of which i had. still not ideal. I think I will try to bring in specific seat from US. I can always sell it afterwards.

If its a newborn baby this may be of help - Mama's & Papa's had a navata carrycot which has a safetybelt inside for baby and attaches to the car safety belts and it is classed as a propper car seat. Therefore baby is lying down flat like in a pram when travelling in it.

Not sure if they still make them as I have'nt seen them in on their current web site, they look something like the pod.

I used mine until my baby was about 7 months and my sister-in-law is using it at the moment. The reason I bought it in the first place was that I had read that babies should not be in rock-a-tots for more than 30 mins at a time until at least 8 weeks old in order for their spines to develop properly. It was brilliant and baby slept in it for the first few weeks until old enough to go into the cot.

I wish you best for luck with your baby and hopefully you will be able to get sorted without having to go the US option.

The best person in Ireland would be Tony Kealy in Dublin.

He has two shops in Dublin but you can usually catch him in the South Dublin one (01) 4503966. He is the most knowledgeable in Ireland in relation to products, regulations etc.

Give him a shout.

thanks for the replies as I got some good ideas.
Well one call led to another and
the result is that my quest has led me to incarsafetycentre.co.uk
They have an office in Belfast and they sell a seat called nordic two way elite which can be used for child in hip spica cast. comes from nordic countries where interestingly all children sit rear facing until they are 2 yrs old. I was advised that US seats do not meet euro safety standards and vice versa so not to buy one there...
