Special Needs Child: Can we write off expenses against tax?

Our son was diagnosed as Autistic this time last year. The last year has been spent fighting to try and get some services for him.

In January we decided on a path of action, and my wife gave up work to focus on working with our son full time.

She attended a training course in the UK and has since implemented some of the training with significant success. This included taking one room of the house and setting it up to suit the therapy for our son.

We are due to take our son over to the USA in August for futher therapy. The training in the UK cost circa 2K Euro's and America will cost circa 10K Euro's.

I am wondering is there any potential to write off some of these expenses, or at least get some part of it back.

Am I better writing to Revenue, or Dept Education ?

If anybody could give me some direction as to the best way to progress this I would be very grateful

Thanks

Re: Special Needs

For what it's worth
  • Any chance that these expenses qualify for [broken link removed]?
  • Any chance that one of are relevant?
  • Anything useful on ?

Re: Special Needs

Is the USA the only option for further treatment?

Didn't a RTE reporter, ? Gorman, get free treatment in another EU country for a brain tumour because his consultant referred him and said treatment wasn't available in Ireland?

Re: Special Needs Child: Can we write off expences against tax?

Thanks for the responses folks, will review them and see what they give me.

Sluice44,

Thanks for your suggestion. As far as Autism goes most of the advances are coming out of the USA, due to their high rate of it.

Thanks
