Planning on travelling in South America for about 4 weeks next summer.

Any reccommendations on places to see / places to avoid?

Would prefer to fewer places and get to se them more than trying to see everything.

To be honest 4 weeks is very short to see South America. However, must sees are Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls in Argentina. Cusco in Peru, where from there you can visit Machu Picchu. As you only have four weeks id suggest getting the train up and make it a day trip. Try and visit Bolivia and do the Salt flats tour, amazing aswell. (Better to go from Tupiza to Yuanni). Avoid Lima in Peru, although you will probably have to fly in here to get to Cusco, but try and get out as quick as possible. With the tight timeframe you are best to take advantage of the overnight buses which are plentyfull and quite decent (especially in Argentina). Try and learn a bit of the Spanish between now and then as it will make your trip so much easier.

If you are a skiing fan, head to Las Lenas in Argentina. Its got a fantastic atmosphere, you could ski for a week or so and then make your way back to Buenos Aires visiting places along the way. Patagonia will be fairly off limits then, you could then fly up to Iguazu. 4 weeks in argentina would be nice....you wouldnt be unduly stressed either trying to get from place to place....

Thanks both of you for your suggestions Hope to try and see fewer places but spend more time there rather than try and see everywhere

Rio is fantastic: Ipanema is the place to stay. Certainly worth a few days.

Buenos Aires suits some people, but not all - stay flexible on the idea in case you want to move on after a few days. It will be cold there during our summer.

Horse riding on an estancia in Argentina can be very enjoyable if you're in to that sort of thing - if you are, perhaps stay for a night or two.

Take in a soccer match or two - the atmosphere is amazing; there are tour guides who organise these things (e.g Boca Juniors in BA).

A day trip from BA to Uruguay via boat is certainly worth it.

It's hard booking planes with credit cards in SA, so ensure you either have lots of cash on hand (not sure about travellers cheques) or else travel by bus where possible.

would you not just keep it to one country? e.g. argentina. four weeks there and you will have taken it in really well. rather than skipping about the continent. anywho for wahts its worth:

rio -great city, great parties, beaches etc.
BA - ok not really mad on it
bariloche - loved it if you go in july you should be able to go skiing there. get the bus from ba i think about 12hours and go first class too. like flying first class but on a bus.
mendoza - wine, wine and more wine, good food too and casino to boot
igazcu - brilliant sight to behold. do brazil side first then argentina side.
glaciers down south of argentina are worth the trip too.

Colombia is perfect for a four week trip. Fly to Bogota, then go to Villa de Leyva, one of the most beautiful towns in all of South America. Then go to San Gil white water rafting and paragliding. Then go cross country to Cartagena (a stunning city) via Mompox, which is like something from 1940s Mississippi... After that, you can do a 6-day jungle trek to the Ciudad Perdida (1,000 year old lost city in the mountains) which is like something from Peru, only spookier.

If you stay on the main tourist trails (which aren't over run like the rest of South America) there will be no safety issues at all. Plus, Colombians are easily the most friendly people you will meet in South America, and it's dirt cheap.

I couldn't recommend it enough. A brilliant country to go to if you only have the four weeks....

I would suggest looking at some blogs from people that have taken the trip.

My sister is on a trip around the world and was in South America for a month or so.

I've sent you a PM with her blog address. Don't fancy posting on site.
