Hi all,

I want to have a company sound proof some of the walls of my 7 year old 3 bed semi. What options are available? I am no expert but as far as I know this involves putting batons into the walls and increasing their debt. Any further explanation would be appreciated! My wife is VERY much against this as we would have to do wall up the stairs and she doesn't want to loose space. She believes there my be an option to pump some kind of sound-proof insulation into the walls, this would be ideal but sounds too good to be true. Any suggestions please?

Cheers in advance

there's no pumped solution, your party wall is a fire rated structural element

what is the party wall made from: ie is it block or timber frame?

the main issue with trying to sound proof a semi-d is that sound often travels through the floors and walls (structural elements)

I would suggest that you start with adding insulation to the attic - maybe removing what's there (probably mineral wool ?) and installing something more dense like cellulose and lots of it. also pump the external wall cavities (presuming block cavity)

then take on one room and place a wood fibre board followed by a layer of plasterboard, and check/consider the results

I'm fond of Cork, hemp and some of the wood fibre products for this type of job but the results will depend on what noise is actually coming through the floors, walls - impact noise essentially

I used ATIL isostrip T and it worked well. I did the work myself so cannot recommend a contractor.

I also used Resilient bars from Gypsum in another room and it was 90% as effective and quite a bit cheaper.

I would recommend the latter system.
