I`m cuurently on holiday in Toronto and bought a Sony DCR SR82 Hard disk camcorder. The guy in the shop (I know...never trust what a seller says) told me I wouldn't have any problems with the camera in Ireland.

I've had a read of the manual and the files are stored in Mpeg2 format. From wilkpedia I have seen that you can have PAL or NTSC within MPEG2. The manual does say that to playback on a TV the TV beeds to be able to accept NTSC signals.

I can live with not being able to playback onto a TV directly form the camera but I'm hoping it will be easy to copy to a PC and burn onto DVD.

Is it straight forward to convert mpeg2 files from NTSC to PAL?

I understand that alot of new TV's and DVD players will now play both formats. Our main TV is a Philips widescreen, approx 5 years old. WOuld anyone be able to confirm the chances of it being able play NTSC signals?

I'm beginnning to wonder if the couple of hundred euro I'm going to save is worth the hassle.

Many thanks

You should have no problem with the PC. You might find you can set NTSC/PAL in the software.
