My 16 year old has informed me that Sony have warned him that his (my) credit card details may have been compromised in the recent hacking scandal. So far, there are no signs of fraudulent transaction on my CC account.

What should I do? Cancel the card and get a new one as a precaution? Slim

According to RTE the credit card details were encrypted by Sony.

There should be little danger therefore of credit card fraud arising in this instance.

"Encryption" could mean a multitude of things and until Sony releases the details of the algorithms they've used to encrypt the data, it's not possible to say whether the data is likely to remain secure or not.

With "encrypted details" of 100 million card accounts leaked, you can be sure that the networks (Visa, MasterCard etc) are looking into this as a matter of urgent necessity. If your banks feel that your account details have been compromised, then your bank is likely to lock down your account immediately and issue you with a new card + number.

For the moment, if you haven't heard from them, then it's reasonable to assume that your account details are safe.
