My situation is both myself and partner are on JA.

Now my son has been 3 mths finished school and wants to do a FAS course but he has to be assessed for an allowance based on our income.

He is obviously living with us but we have not got any payment for him since he turned 18.

As we his parents are unemployed, what allowance will he receive?

In effect we have been assessed already as having no means, and I have read on the dept site that should he stay at home he will recieve 100 euro max as he is 18 yrs old.

If he gets a course with fas will he be entitled to a full 196?

I doubt that very much, I'd say the means test is only to see if they will cover a free course for your son.

the €196/€100 rates are based soly on whether one lives at home or not, afaik.

Ivor James - FAS training courses are free to all people who qualify for Social Welfare payments. Budget 2010 introduced a new rule, whereby you will not get a training allowance when you start a FÁS scheme unless you are entitled to a qualifying payment, such as Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit.

Is your son claiming jobseekers allowance?? if not ensure he is as he is entitled to sign on. It will be best to do this before he accepts a FAS course. He will have to register an interest in a FAS course by registering with his local FAS office.

The rate of the weekly training allowance is linked to your age. In 2010 if you are 15 or 16 years of age, the rate will be €79.90. If you are aged 17 years, the rate will be €99.80. If you are 18 years or over, it will be €196.00. More info here So if your son is already signing on he Will qualify for the full rate. Good Luck to him hope he does well!!
