Folks,
any suggestions - want to break journey between dublin and clifden over 2 days - looking for a nice lodge/small country house/hotel somewhere en route - don't mind a 10-20 mile detour from the dublin - galway/mayo road

help please!

Yes, it's a bit of a desert. My wife is from Connemara, we've small children and yet there seems to be nowhere to stop for food or accommodation.

Wineport is great, not cheap, but lovely food and wine.

I've heard about the Wine Port too and I think it gets rave reviews. Haven't been there though!

I know it's a big hotel which might not be what you want, but the Hodson Bay in Athlone (just off the bypass) is really nice. They have new "retreat rooms" which are so nice and the spa and leisure centre is class. But you certainly won't get that small cottagey feel! It's right on the lake, though, which is nice.
