Solutions for front driveway & back garden?

Hi,

Our front driveway is mainly concrete with a small area (approx. 3ft wide & probably the length of an average car) of grass/plants on one side. As we have 2 vehicles, the concrete part is a bit too narrow and we have ended up driving over the grass area slightly, which has resulted in a muddy patch. We got a price for concreting in this area and it was approx. €650. Unfortunately we are unable to spare this cash at the moment and we were wondering if there would be any simple solution to this that we could do ourselves, apart from digging it out & concreting ourselves, as my husband has a bad back!

Also we were wondering if there is a cheap alternative to grass in a back garden..... again the bad back results in problems when cutting the grass but unfortunately we cannot afford to pay to have paving or decking done. Does anyone know of any alternatives we could do ourselves?

Thanks,
Tweety.
