Hi guys,

we've been in the house a year and have decided that we need a kitchen, .. in case you're wondering we bought a cash and carry kitchen for the utility room and have been using it for food preperation, etc, but want something nice for the proper kitchen area.

Recently popped up to Mayo to a swanky kitchen making shop, .. to my amazement the quote they gave us was +35K Euros, (you'd think that after two years of NASA-esque quotations you'd get used to this?), .... is this normal? This did not include accessories, (fridge, sink, cooker, hob), and did not include a counter top, granite, marble or otherwise??

I would really appreciate if anyone who has had their kitchen made recently would give me a ballpark figure of what they were charged or if someone might recommend a decent kitchen maker?

i think it totally depends on your outlook and what you want ...ie. some people see a kitchen as an investment and choose quality solid wood with perhaps solid worktops etc. Others choose coated mdf which is cheap and cheerful and is financially viable to replace after 4-5 years.

I paid €4300 for my kitchen in cavan and the fitter took in all my extra requests, fitted to some akward areas and in general and put in 3 full height stoage units in a hallways. It looks great although it is chipboard and mdf. Again it depends on what you want.

We were quoted 26K from a swanky kitchen shop, including granite, but with MDF carcasses.
Solid wood carcasses are a wild price.

We shopped around and The eventual cost, including solid wood doors and granite and installation was 13K.

I agree that a nice kitchen is a good investment, but shop around and ytou will get a good kitchen for a lot less than your first quote.

Sorry i didnt read the subject header correctly...you did say solid doors so ignore my mdf spiel!!

We are currently getting our kitchen fitted. It is solid oak with sollid pine carcasses and a granite worktop. It is costing 12K plus utility at 2K. That doe snot include fridge, washing machine etc but does include sink and taps and fitting of same.

we got quoted 26-35K to get a solid kitchen, 12K doesn't seems right..it must be small or else there is a catch, especially if you put granite on top of that. we eventually went with solid doors and chipboard carcass, came in at 8K including an island, ladder unit and top and floor units, worktop came in at 4 K for the same plans..this excludes sink and appliances..

I'd say Johnnyg got his kitchen at the same place as me..and either the earlier 12K isn't right or we have both been paying too much..
Kitchen (solid oak doors - chipboard carcas-incl taps and sink) cost me 9 K + 5K for the granite + 4.5 K for the appliances + 3.5K for builder,tiler, tiles, electrician and plumber. It is a good size and has a cooking island.
If you go for black granite, choose something with a speckle, or else polish till you drop.

There is a plcae in Dublin that will sell you carcas's for your kitchen, then if you have a little balls go to a main supplier of raw kitchens, ie the place where the shops buy from, I did this and I got a guy to fit kitchen, cost quoted from 3 places 11k 13k and 9,500K, I organised it all myself price 3,300, send me a message if you want name of carcas and supplier,

i bought a standard kitchen from kitchen world for 8.5k and upgraded it by replacing all the visible malamine bits with real wood veneered mdf which i got in noyeks in 8x4 sheets and then sprayed up with sand/seal lacquer.
i disassembled the wine rack,fridge and corner shelf units etc and used the bits as templates. overall, it makes the kitchen look like it cost 3 times what it actually cost. i did it all myself and it didnt take much effort. i would imagine a kitchen fitter could do it far quicker.

What was included in the 12K was

-solid oak doors and panelling
-pine carcasses
-soft close doors
-black granite worktop on cabinets and island
-installation
-franke sink

Does not include
-Appliances
-Extractor fan


The kitchen is about 6m by 4m with floor and top cabinets on two walls and an island.
The only drawback is that the supplier is very busy and hard to get to finish but he should be finished today.

Sounds like good value lastbuilders. Especially since the granite worktop is included.

I paid 11K for kitchen with solid doors and end panels and chipboard carcases. Including Island unit. Granite top was extra 3K when I organised it myself. Kitchen crowd were looking for 4.5K for same. Kitchen included sink and taps of my choosing from their range of Franke. No appliances included which I bought through the internet from the UK.

I agree with happy harry about the black granite. If you go for a plain colour you will spend your days polishing it. By buying the granite direct from supplier myself I was able to pick the particular piece of granite that the worktop was cut from as colour varies from piece to piece.

The thing with a kitchen is you have to decide if you are going to buy cheap and replace every few years or spend money on quality and keep for a long time.

The kitchen we chose was a white oak but we have it coated so that it can be painted later if we want to change the look without changing the whole kitchen.

And thus concludes my first post on AAM, hope it is of some help.

I'd be wary of anyone saying they're providing solid wood carcases as if it's a plus point, the reason they'll provide them is to save them money instead of using the factory built chipboard carcass kits. It's not a valid reason to charge a customer more. Also a clumsily built pine carcass will look naff especially when the doors are of a modern style.

I reckon it does cost the manufacturer more to use solid timber rather than MDF or chipboard, I think the solid timber is 'better' in some ways, manmade boards better in others. And if it costs the manufacturer more then he should charge more himself.

Factory built chipboard carcass kits are very cheap in my opinion, all mass produced... whereas solid timber doesn't seem to be used as much by mass producers.

Lastbuilders 12K quote seems very reasonable given the granite alone could have been 3K to 4K... also solid Oak doors.

i boughty my entire kitchen from kitchen world in waterford. it cost about 12k all in which included appliances ( dishwasher, microwave etc ) , granite top with franke sink, larder with pull out shelves and also extra features ie soft close drawers, multiple bin cabinet, rotary corner unit etc.
the kitchen is bigger than average i suppose. i tried loads of places before i picked kitchen world, all the others were either triple the price or really bad quality. when you want quality and value for money i could not reccommend them enough. James ( the manager ) and the lads are great to deal with. there was a slight delay with the doors on the kitchen units so they gave me back 10% of the value of the kitchen back in credit!
I have no connection with kitchen world, besides being a happy customer.

I have a cheap chipboard kitchen for 31 years now. Thinking of changing doors only. Can anyone suggest where to find doors.
Who say a cheap chipboard job only does a few years?

we use birch plywood for the carcasses of our kitchens, most of our kitchens however are manor style with a face frame and inset doors. the prices above were they for cabinets with lay on doors

Would be very grateful for info re carcases I am using some second hand solid wood doors in a remake of my kitchen. I have obtained some very good quality
