Hi,

I am building a 2900 sq ft house in which I am having UFH upstairs and downstairs (using an oil boiler). I want to include two solid fuel stoves, one of which will have a back boiler so that it can be used to heat the water and UFH.

Can anyone advise whether this is possible?

I am also installing HRV

I presume you mean MVHR - Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery?
For this kind of system to work efficiently, the fires must be sealed.
As does the entire house, to Part L recommendations.

You seem to be a self-builder, is this the case?

Self builders seem loath to obtain competent professional advice for some reason, even though they are producing 30-40% of the houses even in the "good times".

I would recommend that you take advice from a BER assessor as a minimum, who can advise you on the overall Part L compliance strategy.
I would advise that you consult an archtiect about the overall design of the building, thermal stores, the disposition of windows and theri location and the orientation of the house.
I would ask a Mechanicla and Electrical engineer to advise you inrelation to your specification and products used for the heating, plumbing, and sustainable energy sources you intend to use to comply with Part L.

If you rely on hearsay here, or salesmen of various perseasions, you may end up with a poorly balanced development, where - for example - you put all your money into the latest triple glazed system but didn't include a lobby/porch.
Or you might have invested all your money in fossil fuel systems, despite buidligng on a very windy and exposed south facing site.
Or you went for some hotch-potch technology comprising of cavity walling and beads, wne you could have achieved twice the figure using external insulation or Passive Haus cosntruction.

Now is the time to think of such things.

All advice on AAM is remote from the situation and cannot be relied upon as a defence or support - in and of itself - should legal action be taken.
Competent legal and building professionals should be asked to advise in Real Life with rights to inspect and issue reports on the matters at hand.

Hi ONQ,

Yes I do mean MVHR and I am meeting all part L recommedations (and more than that).

I have a very good contractor, architect and BER assessor employed so there is no reluctance for professional advice here.

Perhaps I have confused the question by including a reference to HRV, I just wanted to give the overall picture.

Basically I'm just looking for a second/third opinion as to whether a solid fuel stove and boiler is compatible with UFH

I will be talking this through with both my plumber and my architect, however I have got very useful advice in the past from you and other posters on this website therefore I feel it is always worthwhile asking.

Thanks again for your reply

Well, okay, but the reason I asked is that the two aren't compatible AFAICS.

UFH is best used to provide a constant low level of heat with space heaters of some sort - fires, radiators, etc. - to "top up" as required.
Using an occassionally used space heater as a source for the UFH doesn't seem to make much sense, but perhaps I'm misunderstanding your intent.

UFH has a slow response time compared to space heaters, even if you use a lightweight screed and foil insulation underneath and around the perimeter.
You may have some professionals advising you but IMO not the subject matter expert level M&E advice you need with such complex and overlapping systems.

Contractors are not consulting engineers - that's why I suggested you use a specialist.

Fair enough...might go for something like this
