Hope this is in the right section.

A friend of mine just got a phonecall from they solicitor saying that he owed money from a house sale 2 years ago.
The last correspondance and phone calls were in jan 08.

Can they come looking for money now more than a year and a half later.

Yes they can come looking for the money now but it is bad form to get a bill so long afterwards. Did your friend pay the bill at the closing, it's unlikely a large bill like this could be overlooked? I'm surprised the solicitor didn't take it from the sale proceeds.

There is a disagreement over weather he owes the money or the lending bank.At the time they were doing special deals to attract you in.
It's under the grand mark but doesn't have the money, could a payment scheme be offered (ie pay it off over time).

Now you've changed the circumstances. Your friend purchased a house, he understood that the mortgage bank would pay his legal fees, is this correct? What made him think this?

Or is it a case of he can't afford the fees and wants to see how he can pay it now. I'm sure discussing it with the solicitor and coming to a mutual agreement to get a weekly payment is the best solution. Incidentally 1K for a house purchase is very reasonable.

The legal fee was part of a deal to get a mortgage with them. The complete bill was in excess of 2K. He paid the 1K plus and teh mortgage institute was to pay the rest.
The only reason that solicitor was picked was that branch were doing a deal with that firm.

Do you know if the bank paid the fee? Can he ask the bank, has he documentation to prove his arrangement with the bank or solicitor. He may have been given say a written quotation by the solicitor. Or pick up the phone and have a chat with the solicitor.
