Hi

I bought an apartment off the plans in a new development in Riga and its due for completion in the next few months. Its my first venture into foreign property. I paid a 20% deposit initially and bought through a well known Irish agency.

I dont have a solicitor yet for this. My question is should I take a more expensive reccomendation from the agency or whats the best way of getting a solicitor for a property over there? tks

You've already paid a 20% deposit and you don't have a solicitor?!

Get the contract translated into English by a notary in a parallel translation (both languages on the one piece of paper). Get it checked by your solicitor in Ireland. If your solicitor is happy, only sign a contract that has both languages on it.

Also engage an independent local (Rigan) solicitor.

Yes we did pay a deposit without consulting any solicitor so I take it from your remarks that wasnt the wisest thing to do! Anyway its done now but its finding a Latvian solictor that I'm just looking to get now.

I rang the agent about it and she said they would reccommend somone but it could be more expensive to go with them, which is a strange thing to say I suppose but I might end up doing that anyway.

I would have thought that a fundamental rule of overseas property purchasing was not to go with the solicitor recommended by the selling agent?

The may be able to assist in finding an English-speaking solicitor.

Whats your reason for saying that-just simply cos its more expensive? Good idea about the embassy but I think Ive gotten a recommendation today so thanks anyway

Rey77,

You need to make sure the solicitor is acting in your best interests. Is someone in bed with the agent going to be looking out for you?
