When you're in the process of buying an affordable home do you need to employ your own solicitor or do the Dublin City Council provide one?

Thanks for your answer.I'm not sure what A "Family Home Declaration" is. We don't own our own home. We're renting at the moment. We're going to buy an apartment under the affordable housing from Dublin city council and i was wondering if I'd have to employ a solicitor or would the Council provide one.I rang a couple of solicitors and they charge from €1,200 to do the paperwork.

It's just a short form to indicate whether or not the property is a 'family home' ie whether it will be purchased by a married couple, or by a married person for use as a home for that person and their spouse. It shouldn't cost you ten percent of what those solicitors are asking for. The Council does all the rest of the legal work.

yes the council do the rest, but please be aware, the council charge your solicitor fee's back into your mortgage so you dont have to pay it up front, but the fee is around what you were saying. Re Family home decloration form, you should shop around for this, i know ppl who have paid a few houndred for it, however i only paid €20 for it and €10 for it to be whitnessed the day of the signing.

I would think in this situation you should get independent legal advice. It may cost you a bit more but this will be one of the biggest purchases of your life and so you should have a professional, who is acting in your intersests only, look over the contracts.

May people have come on this site after purchasing an affordable home and are unsure of their rights/obligations. If paying an independent solicitor they can review the contracts and explain exactly what you are getting into.
